REASONABLE DOUBTS by Cara Bristol

Cara Bristol's book,  REASONABLE DOUBTS, is the lastest in her Rod & Cane Society series. It is a story about a widow getting back into the dating scene after twenty-two years of marriage. It's not easy at any age, but it's especially not easy when you want a relationship to include spanking. How and when do you introduce your prospective partner to this kink?

I love this series and the characters in them. I've been waiting for this latest for what seems like forever.  I'm sure you will enjoy the read.

Reasonable Doubts and dating spanko style
By Cara Bristol

Dating doesn’t get easier the older you get. The available pool of available partners shrinks, people get more set in their ways and become more specific about what they want. After people have lived for a while, they may carry “baggage,” emotional wounds or scars from past relationships.

If you find yourself suddenly single after a long marriage, the prospect of dating can be terrifying. Dating isn’t like riding a bicycle: you do forget how.

You have new responsibilities, new requirements, new needs.

For the first time in years, maybe decades, you might find yourself faced with the possibilities of having sex with someone new. Bodies have changed, shifted. Libido may be more or less than it was when you were younger. You’ve learned more about yourself—but that makes you more specific in your expectations of others.

Liz Davenport, the heroine of Reasonable Doubt, was widowed after 22 years of marriage, 27 years with the same man. Her heart has begun to heal and she meets a man she’s thinks she could be interested in. But Liz’s needs are a little more complicated. In addition to facing all the usual issues of that arise when one begins to date again, she has a little secret that complicates things. Liz wants to be spanked. Her marriage was a domestic discipline one. She doesn’t just want her man to be a partner and lover, she wants an HOH. So how does she tell her new man that?

What do you think? Do you think dating is more of a challenge if one is a spanko? Why or why not?

                                            **************************************
REASONABLE DOUBTS BLURB

Widow Liz Davenport assumes when she begins to date, her new man will be like her late husband--a member of the Rod and Cane Society and an experienced disciplinarian who can provide her with loving guidance she requires to feel grounded and secure. So why is she attracted to Grant Davis, an ex-Naval  JAG officer who works for her nemesis and has never spanked a woman in his life?

Events in his recent past have forced Grant to take stock of his life and try some new things. But spank a woman? He’s never considered that before, but with Liz’s coaching he’s willing to try.

But when the past collides with the present, will he be able to step up and become the disciplinarian Liz needs?

                                           ************************************

An excerpt from Reasonable Doubts

“Let’s go.” Grant swatted her ass. A wave of longing rolled through her like thunder traveling across an open plain. She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment and swayed.

More. Please more.

But there wouldn’t be more, because Grant wasn’t that way.

Why couldn’t he be a gentleman and a spanker? Was she foolish to start a relationship with a man who could give only half of what she needed? She’d never settled before. But at the idea of walking away from Grant, a little pang shot through her.

But maybe that ache afforded reason enough to call it quits—get out now before she became more attracted, more attached. She needed a man with the confidence to take her in hand and provide what she needed without her having to ask. A head of household who provided stability, structure, and discipline. A mother-may-I guy would not fit the bill.

Grant was a nice man. A good man. They had no commitments, but eventually she would meet someone who could provide everything she needed, and she would move on. It wasn’t right to use him to stave off the loneliness or to scratch an itch. He deserved better.

“Hey…are you okay?” Grant settled a gentle hand on her shoulder, and she realized a long moment had passed since she’d agreed to leave.

Dating did not get easier when you got older. If anything, it got more complicated. She took a deep breath and turned. She didn’t want to disappoint him, to hurt him. She liked him. Enjoyed his company, his conversation, his laugh.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I can’t do this.”

“If you’re not ready, we don’t have to. I understand,” he said.

He didn’t understand. She would not be ready, ever. Not with him. But the words to mark paid to their fledgling relationship refused to leave her lips. Why did he have to be so nice? Attractive. Sexy. Damn him!

“Why don’t we go have some tea and dessert?” he suggested.

“All right,” she agreed, because she couldn’t bring herself to ask him to take her home.
She slipped out of his sports coat and felt an instant loss of warmth. “Thank you.” She returned it, giving back more than his jacket.

“Are you sure? It’s still chilly in here.”

The only thing she was sure about was how confused she was. “I’m good. Thank you.”

Grant shrugged into his jacket, and they exited the gallery. Misery thickened Liz’s throat, but she held her head high as they strolled down the corridor. They avoided the crowded elevator for the empty stairwell. Liz started to descend the steps, but Grant stopped her on the landing. He lightly gripped her upper arms.

“Listen,” he said. “I’m attracted to you, and I want to sleep with you. But it has to be right. You were married a long time, and this is a big step. We’ll take it at your pace. I’m sorry if I came on too strong.”

He brushed his thumb over her face, and Liz realized she was crying. Her face heated with mortification.

“Hey….” He wrapped his arms around her in a hug, and she hid her face against his neck. He chuckled, a sound of such tenderness, Liz cried harder. “Sweetheart?” Grant rocked her. “Tell me why you’re so upset.”

Because she wanted to sleep with him, but she needed him to spank her. Because her emotions were stronger than she’d thought. She craved discipline, but she desired it from him. Grant had wrapped himself around her heart the way his arms fit so snuggly around her shoulders. “B-because…I don’t know. Because I’m crazy.”

“I like crazy women.”

“Nobody likes crazy women.”'

“I like you.”

“Then you’re crazy.”

“See? We’re perfect for each other.”

She smiled through her tears. A measure of heartache receded, but confusion still reigned. “I’m a basket case.”

“I like baskets.”

Laughter snorted out her nose. She thumped his chest with her fist. “You’re too nice to me.” You don’t make it easy.

Or maybe she complicated the situation. She and Grant had connected. Perhaps she should get out of her own way and let nature run its course. Stop analyzing and go with the flow. Counselor, counsel thyself. Many friends had sought her advice, used her as a sounding board to work through relationship woes. She could read people and had an instinct for who would be good together. How many couples had she matched up over the years? Dozens, probably. But her life was a mess. A turmoil of conflicted emotion.

Fix me a spanking, won’t you, darling?

Some people drank to calm their nerves. Others exercised or meditated. She’d been spanked. So many times, after a grueling day at work, Otis had taken one glance at her and taken her in hand.

Spank me, Grant.

“Can I reconsider?” she asked.

“Reconsider?” he raised his eyebrows.

“I’d like to sleep with you. Tonight,” she said.

“You don’t have to do that. I can wait,” he said, but a lopsided, hopeful smile slid across his face.

She shook her head. “I don’t want to wait.”

As if he feared she might change her mind again, he hustled her down the stairs.

Saturday Spankings

HAPPY SATURDAY.  Today I'm going back in time and sharing a snippet from  DESTINY TAKES A HAND is set in the high country of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Right about now, the high country sounds wonderful.  Probably warm days and cool nights, colored leaves crunching underfoot, the sound of chopping wood, bright blue azure skies, fluffy white clouds, mountain tops cloaked in the first mantle of white. Have I enticed you to take the trip to meet Sam and Chris.

Christopher Matthew Chambers, the eldest son of a wealthy New York family, shows little interest in the family business, preferring to do his own thing much to the disappointment of his father.  When a relative of his mother dies and the family inherit 10,000 acres f prime real estate known as Sutter's Ridge, situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Christopher is sent to attend to the funder arrangement and clear up an remaining legalities.

During his visit, however, the weather takes a turn for the worse and he finds himself in the middle of a snow storm.  While driving back down the mountain he is forced to swerve to avoid a stray elk- he ends up in a ditch. With no help in sight after a couple of hours, he sets off on foot in search of somewhere to hole up until the storm pass.  Fortunately, he stumbles across the house of Samantha Fremont, a sexy burt feisty young woman with whom he feels an instant attraction. A passionate romance quickly blossoms but Samantha's fier temper and stubborness make for some turbulent times.  The sex between them is great but Samantha is headstrong and not inclined to listen to advice, even when it's in her own interest.  When she goes too far, Christopher has no hesitate in putting her across his knee for a well deserved spanking, but he soon discovers that rather than being chastised, she actually enjoys it.

Sam's blatant disregard for his wishes and feelings, with a heart filled with regret, he decides the relationship can't continue.  For a while, it seems a happy ever after may not be in the cards, but then destiny takes a hand..

In this scene, Sam loves to be spanked, so to use it as discipline hasn't worked out so well for Chris. He decides he has to make it more memorable so that she knows he means business.

“I do, it’s not the spanking, the ginger burns, and it hurts.”

“You’re not having any trouble complaining, so deal with it,”  as he continues to spank her.

“Ten more and I’m really going to lay on the heat. Maybe next time you won’t be so anxious to get your bottom warmed.”

When he was finished, he stroked her bottom and removed the ginger telling her she should feel the burn for a little while longer.  She rolled over and looked at him.

“You certainly do make life interesting,” she told him.  He kissed her, rose from the bed, and went to the bathroom to clean up and bring her a wet cloth.

“Interesting enough to stay with me forever?”

Saturday Spankings

Have you noticed that it's lighter a little longer at night.  Instead of 5:30 it's now almost 6:00 before it is dark enough for outside lights.  It always makes me feel better to see it lighter longer. I hate when it gets dark too early, I want to be in bed by 9:00 and then I wake up in the dark.  For me, it's a vicious cycle that is only broken as daylight increases.

Today there's another snippet from The Star-Crossed Cowboy, a modern western romance between Starr Winslow and Jude Barlow. Starr Winslow becomes the owner of Whispering Pines Ranch after the death of her father. Starr is young and loves ranching and is not about to allow her family's legacy to go to ruin.  She knows some men have a hard time taking orders from a woman and that she will have to hire a Ranch Foreman who can take orders from a woman. Enter Jude Barlow.

This week's excerpt takes off where last week's left off. A slightly tipsy Starr is being driven home by Jude.  Her unwanted amorous moves caused Jude to cross the double line and of course the local law officer was right there.  He gets pulled over and is given a sobriety test. He passed and the officer let him off with a warning to drive more carefully but it doesn't improve Jude's mood any.  At the front door, she tells him good night and he tells her the night is not yet over.

In one fluid motion, he pulled her across his knees and laid into her bottom.  He put as much effort into the spanking as he did everything else.  It was  a long time since she’d really been spanked for being naughty, and it hurt more than she remembered.  Of course, her daddy probably took it easy on her; Jude wasn’t. Her tush was on fire but Jude’s calloused hand kept delivering smack after smack.  Long before he stopped, she was wishing she hadn’t pushed his buttons. When it was finally over, he removed her from his lap and sat her down on the sofa next to him.  He stood up and walked toward the door.

“I’ll be here at 9:00 am if I still have a job.  If I’m fired, at least have the decency to give me a good recommendation.  Good night Ms. Winslow.”

The Cowboy and the Mail Order Bride

The Cowboy and the Mail-Order Bride

Angie Sargenti is a prolific author and has written eleven books to date. Her latest, The Cowboy and the Mail Order Bride, tells the story of Eleanor and John Henry Morgan.

Eleanor’s parents passed away unexpectedly, leaving her penniless.  Fearing she had no other options, she accepts an offer of marriage from a wealthy rancher. She agrees to travel out west and become his bride, but party of that agreement means she must subject herself to his discipline.

Can the impetuous Mrs. Morgan abide by her new husband’s rules and make him a comfortable wife, or will she lose him to his former lady friend, Miss Lou Anne Franklin?

                                    *****************************

John Henry Morgan expects his new bride to be an obedient wife and a proper rancher’s wife.  In this excerpt, he is attempting to teach her a lesson toward that end and instead is learning some things about the headstrong Eleanor in the process.

“A pig?  You didn’t say anything about catching pigs in your letters.”
            “I must’ve forgot.”
“You didn’t forget that other thing, though, did you?”
He stopped and jerked me around to face him.
“Little lady, you’d better watch your tone when you’re talking to me.  And get that scowl off your face before I take you back into the bedroom and make you late for breakfast.”
I wanted to protest, but I didn’t.  Instead, I merely nodded and smoothed down my skirts.
Once downstairs, I welcomed the men warmly, treating them like guests at some fancy dinner party.  I gathered up my skirts to sit down at the head of the table, and John Henry took his place at the other end.
I still didn’t want to catch a pig, and I wondered why he was trying to get my goat.  In retaliation, I started a conversation guaranteed to nettle a man so set in his ways.
“Did you hear, John Henry?  They might start letting women vote in Wyoming.”
            “The hell you say.”
“No, it’s true,” I told him.  “I read it in the newspaper yesterday.”
“Well, even if they do, no wife of mine’s going to stick her nose where it don’t belong.  Which puts me in mind of something else: I don’t want to catch you gossiping and spreading rumors like those women in town, or you and me’s going to have us a problem.”
Something about the way he said that made my nether parts clench up, but it also made me secretly angry.
“What else?” I asked him.  “What else is against the rules?”
“Well,” he said, stroking his moustache, “I don’t rightly know.  I ain’t had time to sit and think it all out.”
“Then how will I know?  How will I know I’ve broken the rules if you don’t even know what they are?”
“Yeah, John Henry,” asked Shorty.  “How will she know?”
John Henry set his fork down and looked from Shorty to me.
“Well, I’m a fair man,” he told me, “so I think it’s only right you get a warning.  You keep it up after that, there’s going to be trouble.”
            I nodded.
“Fair enough,” I said, taking another of Mrs. Allen’s delicious biscuits and breaking it open.
            Shorty chuckled.
“You ain’t scared of nothing, are you?” he asked me.
“Not too much,” I said, catching John Henry’s eye in a challenging manner.
John Henry stopped grinning and looked like he wanted to pound his fist on the table.
“Good,” said Shorty, oblivious.  “I think you’ll do just fine out here, won’t she, J.H.?”

“Sure will,” he said, looking directly at me.  “Hell, she ain’t got no choice.”

Saturday Spankings

Welcome to 2015 - I'm wishing this year doesn't go as fast as the last one - it will though because wishing won't make it so.  Hope everybody's hoidays were as terrific as mine. The holidays can sometimes be a traumatic time of year for some, luckily that wasn't the case for me this year. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

When you're finished here, don't forget to visit the other participating blogs.

I don't have a new book to hawk, haven't been doing any writing, so I'm back to giving another snippet from The Star-Crossed Cowboy, a modern western romance between Starr Winslow and Jude Barlow.

Today's snippet takes place after Jude has been hired as the Ranch Foreman but his employment has been officially announced.  He gets a telephone call from Starr's friend say she is drunk and needs a ride home.  He is annoyed and wondering just how this would be in his job description and that he and Starr were going to have to discuss more ground rules.

He shook his head and wondered how this came under the job description of Ranch Foreman; they were going to have to discuss more ground rules.  When he gets to the roadhouse he finds that although she is tipsy, she is far from drunk and it was just a ploy to get him there so she could dance with him.

“You’re annoyed.”

 “You’re damn right; I'm annoyed...

“I’m sorry; I didn’t think.”

“You’re damn right you didn’t think.  You need a good spanking, and I have half a mind to give you what you deserve.”

“Then, why don’t you?”

“Because you’re my boss.”

“Not now I’m not; I'm just a girl you’re driving home.”

“Don’t tempt me.”

There's some poetic license here - the eight lines rule which I usually break but since it's a new year, I thought I would obey the rules for a change. If you want to read more, just click on any of the links below.
