U for Understanding and Saturday Spankings

In addition to it being Saturday and it's Saturday Spanking time, it's also the 21st day of the A to Z Blogging Challenge.

So, the 21st letter of the alphabet is U and my word for today is Understanding.

That's exactly what Juan is trying to get Maria to do.  Understand. And because it's not only SS, I am allowed more than eight sentences - not that I always observe the rules anyway.

Taming Maria

TAMING MARIA is set in California during the 1940's amidst a backdrop of vineyards and ranches and has two childhood sweethearts destined to become lovers. The couple face hardship, adventure, personal tragedy and long periods of separation...but there are some things in life worth waiting for.

In this scene, the Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor and Juan is trying to explain that eventually he will have to join the service. She is totally against it and he is trying to reason with her.  Reason is something that Maria has great difficulty with and Juan knows this all to well and also how to get her to UNDERSTAND.

"I know you. I can hear it in your voice. You have already made your decision, it's just a
matter of time before you take off. You have it all worked out in your head. Maybe you just planned to send me a telegram telling me. What am I supposed to do, just sit here and wait? Suppose you don't come back. Did you ever think of that?"

He knew she was just getting started and he wanted to diffuse the situation. "Maria, try to
understand."

"I don't want to understand. We have just announced our engagement. I don't want to be
engaged to someone who is not around. This should be a happy time and we should be making plans to be together. Not you off somewhere dangerous while I sit here and worry whether or not you'll get yourself killed. Maybe I should give you back your ring. Maybe you should just leave now."

He took hold of her arm. "Stop it, stop it right now!."

"And if I don't?"

"Then I am going to take you over my knee and give you a good spanking. This is about
more than just us. Stop being so pigheaded for a minute and try to Understand; think about what's happening in the world."

"Go to hell!" She turned around and walked out of the room.

I don't think she understood, do you?

  1. I think he'll need to administer a good spanking and then try again :) But then, I'm just mean...

    1. I don't think Maria knows the meaning of the word - it doesn't seem to be in her vocabulary.

  3. Hmm. Maybe she doesn't understand YET, I have a feeling he's going to make sure she understands in a minute! Great snippet Leigh :)

  4. What I loved about that is how real it was. I can imagine many a similar conversation went on in many homes about each and every war, torn between the desire to keep loved ones close and safe, and trying to consider the greater good. Maybe fear prevented understanding but that fear manifested itself in seemingly trivial selfish concerns. Great snippet Leigh

  7. I'm guessing that "go to hell" was not the best thing to say.

  9. Great snippet! I can understand how Maria feels. She doesn't want anything to happen to Juan. It's one of those things where, 'a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.' She probably feels he's abandoning her, but he's not.

    1. She knows it, but doesn't want to admit it to herself or anyone else.

  10. Yeah, it's quite an understandable thing to get upset about. I think Juan's inevitable spanking will help her understand a bit better.

Interesting snippet. 1940s seems like quite an unusual time period in which to set a spanking romance. You don't come across many.

    1. No, you don't. I wanted to capture California back before it exploded into what is is now but not so far back as to lose the Spanish/Mexican flavor.

Maria is a girl who needs lots of time OTK to UNDERSTAND!
